A brief history of pulsar time

Article Abstract:

Occasional sudden jumps in the frequency at which a pulsar emits its signal have prompted theories of neutron stars' internal structure that would account for the irregularities. A.G. Lyne and his colleagues hypothesize that a neutron star may have four distinct zones that rotate at different rates. The glitches would then result from friction between the zones and conservation of angular momentum.

Observation of laser-induced fluorescent cooling of a solid

Article Abstract:

The ytterbium-doped heavy-metal-fluoride glass can be cooled by passing fluorescent radiations through it. The glass is cooled by radiating with a continuous-wave-titanium-sapphire high-efficiency diode laser. The temperature of the solid equilibrates on 15 minutes of radiation. The cooling efficiency of this method is 10,000 times that of the Doppler gas cooling method.
