Putting the carbon back: Black is the new green

Article Abstract:

Enrichment of the Earth's soil with charcoal is found to prevent global warming, reduce the need for fertilizers and greatly increase the size of turnips. Soil scientists, archeologists, geographers and anthropologists have studied terra preta, 'black land', and agreed that the Amazon's dark earths were made by the river basin's original human residents, which contained three times as much phosphorus and nitrogen, producing more vigorous crops.

Mothers of invention?

Article Abstract:

Studies reveal a gender gap in patenting, whereby women patent their inventions less than men, mainly due to attitude and less networks with industry. Also, women without children patent at the same rate as men, indicating that mothers in academic careers do not consider patenting important, which might exclude women scientists comparatively from business opportunities.
