Rational disposal of chemical weapons

Article Abstract:

The 1992 Geneva agreement for the destruction of the world's chemical weapons has led to serious consideration by countries of the former Soviet Union of vaporization of the weapons by underground nuclear explosion. Underground seepage tests in the Soviet Union and the US supply considerable data to evaluate the suggestion. The seismic properties of the granitic structures used in the Soviet Union do not have the same containment cage effect as those used in Nevada. Furthermore, the presence of casing metals and organic chemicals will produces reaction products which may pose a leakage threat.

Working in the chemical industry

Article Abstract:

The chemical industry is continuing to search among chemistry graduates for the most capable recruits despite cutbacks in employment due to the recession. Chemists looking for work should stress such factors as their career plans and summer job experience in addition to academic achievements. The best recruits should consider taking advantage of rapidly multiplying opportunities to work abroad. Although statistics show that most chemists work in industry, new chemists should keep in mind that most chemical companies now offer career paths that allow for work in research.

Chemical analysis

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the establishment of the vocabulary which is used to describe chemical formulae and names by Antoine Lavoisier in 1787. The quantitative logic used in the creation of chemical language is discussed.
