Raven scavenging favours group foraging in wolves

Article Abstract:

An analysis that incorporates a previously ignored feature of wolf foraging ecology, namely the loss of food to scavenging ravens, Corvus corax, is presented. Whether selfish benefits favour group living in various social carnivores that hunt large prey and are vulnerable to scavenging is explored

Responses of elk herd size to fine-scale spatial and temporal variation in the risk of predation by wolves

Article Abstract:

The responses of elk, Cervus elaphus, herd size and composition to natural variation in the risk of predation by wolves, Canis lupus, in the Gallatin Canyon of Montana are studied. It was found that elk herd size increased as distance to protective cover increased.

Social dominance, aggression and faecal glucocorticoid levels in a wild population of wolves, Canis lupus

Article Abstract:

The social subordination in wolvesE leads to chronically elevated glucocorticoid levels is examined. Whether this 'social stress' causes reproductive suppression of subordinates in cooperatively breeding species is also determined.
