Rearing environment affects behaviour of jumping spiders

Article Abstract:

Rearing conditions have an influence on salticid behaviour, according to research analyzing the impact of different rearing environments on three elements of jumping spider, Phidippus audax, behaviour: response to videotaped prey, movement in an open field and the ability to complete a detour to reach prey. Field-caught animals were more active and stereotactic than laboratory-reared spiders in an open-field test, more likely to respond to presentations of videotaped prey and made better progress in a detour test. It is clear that care should be taken to avoid assuming that the behaviour of laboratory-reared spiders is hardly any different from that of animals in the field.

Individual decisions and group dynamics: why pholcid spiders join and leave groups

Article Abstract:

The role of individual variations in the dynamics of group formation were examined by the mark-recapture study and a series of laboratory and field experiments with Holocnemus pluchei spiders. The size and recent feeding success has a greater influence on the spiders' decisions of joining or leaving the group.

Jumping spiders in space: movement patterns, nest site fidelity and the use of beacons

Article Abstract:

Experiments using colored beacons were conducted with Phidippus clarus jumping spider populations to determine whether the spiders used cues other than their nests to navigate. Findings indicate that P. clarus do possess navigational skills and possess the capability of using beacons to navigate.
