Regional trends in mercury distribution across the Great Lakes states, north central USA

Article Abstract:

The distribution of mercury (Hg) within one region can vary considerably rather than necessarily being uniform as is usually thought. Forest floor and soil samples from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan correlated high levels of Hg in the environment with proximity to sources of anthropogenic pollution such as industry. Variations in wet sulfate deposition concomitant to changes in Hg level indicate that the regional differences in Hg are due to human-caused particulate pollution.

Prehistoric increases in the pH of acid-sensitive Swedish lakes caused by land-use changes

Article Abstract:

Analyses of sediment records from Swedish lakes revealed that land-use changes have a significant influence on the pH levels of acid-sensitive lakes. Based on sediment records, it was shown that pH levels increased from 5.5 to 6.5 when forest cover was depleted in favor of agriculture land during the Iron Age. During the 20th century, pH levels fell to 4.5 and this drop was attributed to acid deposition.

Lubricating lakes

Article Abstract:

Satellite and ground data has disclosed the presence of four additional lakes in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, which are remarkable not only for their size, but also for their location of being just where the flow of the ice sheet begins to accelerate. Researchers have provided the links between subglacial lakes and the dynamics of the ice sheet in one of the largest ice streams in Antarctica.
