Repeated restraint and isolation stress alters adrenal and lymphocyte functions and some leukocyte differentiation antigens in lambs

Article Abstract:

The effect of repeated restraint and isolation stress on cortisol secretion, lymphocyte proliferative responses to mitogens, production of interluekin-2, and expression of leukocyte differentiation antigens was tested on 24 lambs, equally divided into either control or treatment groups. They wereboth placed in environmentally controlled rooms, with the test group being subjected to daily 6 hours stress treatment which started on 12th day till 14thday. Serial serum sampling done revealed increased secretion of cortisol, reduction in lymphocyte proliferation, and alterations in populations of luekocytes expressing some cluster of differentation antigens.

Effect of zeranol implants in ram and wether lambs on performance traits, carcass characteristics, and subprimal cut yields and distribution

Article Abstract:

The performance and carcass quality of ram and wether lambs were compared and the effects of implanted zeranol, an anabolic steroid with estrogen-like activity, in ram and wether lambs at birth and at weaning were also analyzed. Rams grew more efficiently postweaning, utilized feeds more efficiently and had better performance and carcass quality as compared to wethers. Implanting zeranol near birth improved the feeding efficiency and average daily weight gain although the carcass quality was minimally improved.

Effects of implanting ram and wether lambs with zeranol at birth and weaning on palatability and muscle collagen characteristics

Article Abstract:

A study on influence of zeranol on palatability and muscle collagen traits of ram and wether lambs indicated limited influence of zeranol-implanting. Traits exhibited by the implanted rams (IR), non-implanted rams (NIR), implanted wethers (IW) and non-implanted wethers (NIW) were compared. Rams showed greater synthesis and accumulation of collagen in longissimus muscle than wether lambs. Decrease in sensory panel tenderness was observed in chops from IR group only.
