Residual effects of thinning and high white-tailed deer densities on northern redback salamanders in southern New England oak forests

Article Abstract:

Cleacutting and other types of even-age regeneration harvests can affect forest amphibians, but there has been less research on less intensive treatments related to silviculture. A survey of redbacked salamanders over three years showed no significant impact on salamander numbers either from white-tailed deer density or from thinning. There was a positive correlation between redback observations and the density of tall stems, and with coarse, woody pieces of debris.

Video surveillance to assess highway underpass use by elk in Arizona

Article Abstract:

The behavioral pattern of elk in central Arizona, U.S.A., while using highway underpasses (UP) was studied using integrated video systems. Elks were found to use UP more in summers and less in winter and while it showed preference to open UP with earthen sides, it displayed resistance to crossing UP with concrete walls.
