Response of red-backed voles to recent patch cutting in subalpine forest

Article Abstract:

Biologists studied the effect of patch cutting in forest habitats of southern red-backed voles by monitoring vole activity in patch cut forest. Voles were absent from clear cut forests, but were present in patchcuts. Vole activity was highest on both sides of the patchcut edge, which could be explained by voles' perceptions of landscapes.

Fragmentation of landscape as a cause for genetic subdivision in bank voles

Article Abstract:

The barrier effects of various roadways on the genetic subdivision of bank vole (Clithrionomys glareolus) populations are studied. The study shows for the first time that old geographic barriers and fragmentation of landscape such as highways is affecting the gene flow and genetic substructuring of populations.

Simple spatial modeling tool for prioritizing prescribed burning activities at the landscape scale

Article Abstract:

Implementation of a prescribed-burning regimen model to Florida forest management is described. The model incorporates landscape management objectives and key conservation criteria to produce priority recommendations. Data for the model are obtained via remote sensing and geographic information systems.
