Responsiveness to adipogenic agents in stromal-vascular cultures derived from lean and preobese pig fetuses: an ontogeny study

Article Abstract:

Adipose tissue stromal-vascular cell cultures from preobese and lean pig embryos were tested for their response to adipogenic agents. Cell cultures from preobese embryos have more adipocyte-precursor cells than do lean embryos. The responses of the cell cultures from 50-, 75- and 110-day fetuses to adipogenesis-promoting agents were significantly different. The genotype dependence of the adipogenic response became evident between the 75th and 110th day of embryonic development. Adipogenesis is also favored by the hormonal profile of the preobese fetus. Results indicate that the control of preadipocyte cells in the embryo will delay obesity in the developing pig.

The effect of live weight gain and live weight loss on body composition of merino wethers: chemical composition of the dissected components

Article Abstract:

A study was done to compare the chemical composition of carcass from sheep slaughtered at 23, 26.3 or 29.6 kilograms of live weight to that grown to 33 kilograms and then underfed to achieve the same intended slaughter weights. Results show a greater dissected side weight in live weight loss (LWL) animals compared to live weight gain animals which was attributed to the greater chemical fat in the LWL animals. Treatments in protein and water weights in the dissected side did not show significant differences.
