Restored top carnivores as detriments to the performance of marine protected areas intended for fishery sustainability: a case study with red abalones and sea otters

Article Abstract:

The demographic data for red abalones at nine sites along the California coast is examined where six of the sites are within marine protected areas, and sea otters occupy four of the six sites. It is concluded that the coastal marine protected areas off California cannot enhance abalone fisheries if they contain sea otters.

Species Extinction in the Marine Environment: Tasmania as a Regional Example of Overlooked Losses in Biodiversity

Article Abstract:

Evidence is presented countering the assertion that few marine species are presently approaching extinction or have become extinct. Reasons cited include an absence of broad-scale, systematic sampling and an overdependence on physical and chemical data as tools for monitoring environmental trends.

Designing effective marine protected areas in Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, Colombia, based on biological and sociological information

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on conservation policy input and design for Colombia's Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. Processes involved include identification of ecological connectivity and pathways among habitats via the use of habitat-mapping techniques.
