Rio review to rejuvenate green initiatives

Article Abstract:

Some 500 representatives of governments, environmental groups and the private sector will meet in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in Mar 1997 for a commemoration of the 1992 Earth Summit. Called RIO+5, the event seeks to review global environmental events since the Earth Summit even as it also tries to regenerate some of the momentum that has been lost since 1992. The deterioration of the environment continues as developed countries fail to fulfill the promises they made in Rio and as global economic trends cause environmental problems to remain.

Clinton's plan for 'green car' faces bumpy research road

Article Abstract:

US Pres Bill Clinton announced his support in working for a 'clean car' development program but his administration is likely to have difficulties in promoting this program. Uncertainty over what substitute power sources to take and barriers in engineering innovation aggravate the situation. However, the US Council for Automotive Research, the Department of Energy weapons laboratories and the directorate on low emission technology can help execute the 'clean car' proposal.
