Angiogenesis in cancer and other diseases

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the occurrence of pathological angiogenesis in a variety of diseases such as inflammatory, ischaemic and cancerous diseases. The discovery of anti- and pro-angiogenic molecules is discussed.

The candidate tumor suppressor protein ING4 regulates brain tumor growth and angiogenesis

Article Abstract:

A candidate tumor suppressor gene, ING4, is involved in regulating brain tumors growth and angiogenesis is reported. Results indicate that ING4 physically interacts with NF-kB, forming a transcriptional complex, and represses NF-kB-responsive genes.

Role of HIF-1-alpha in hypoxia-mediated apoptosis, cell proliferation and tumour angiogenesis

Article Abstract:

Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1-alpha deficiency prevents cells from undergoing hypoxic growth arrest, and, in a mitogenic microenvironment, stimulates proliferation. It has been established that tumour vascularization is largely controlled by HIF-1-alpha, partly as a result of upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor. The HIF-1-alpha-dependent growth arrest in response to hypoxia has similarities with the p53-mediated control of growth arrest/apoptosis in response to genotoxic or physical stresses.
