SIV adaption to human cells

Article Abstract:

Genetic analysis and molecular cloning of a strain of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) that grows in human cells under laboratory conditions has revealed changes in the virus's DNA, its genetic code. Specifically, researchers have discovered a codon (a segment of genetic information for producing molecules involved in life processes) which inhibits the production of the protein viral envelope (the outer portion of a virus particle) so that the resulting envelope resembles that of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus responsible for AIDS. Researchers believe that this mutation occurred in the laboratory to allow the virus to survive better in human cell hosts. The researchers were able to remove the stop codon and restore the normal production of SIV envelope protein. This report clearly demonstrates the difficulties and complications of studying complicated host-pathogens (agents that cause pathology, such as viruses) in tissue culture.

Killer in search of a motive?

Article Abstract:

Genetic research has identified a gene which appears to suppress tumour growth in mammals. The gene, designated p73, is a p53 gene homologue. The scientific community should be cautious before declaring its apparent ability to suppress neuroblastoma-associated tumours. Evidence suggests that the gene, found on chromosome 1p, is not expressed when tumours occur. However, further research must prove its physiological nature.
