Sandoz-funded research from Rhine spill suggests blockages are worse than toxins

Article Abstract:

Research financed by the Swiss chemical firm Sandoz has found that engineering projects that restrict water flow do more long-term harm to rivers than the release of large quantities of toxic pollutants. Sandoz established the $7.7 million 'Rhine fund' for research on river pollution to make amends for a 1986 fire at one of its chemical storage depots that severely polluted the Rhine. The research indicates that such disastrous but short-lived episodes of pollution may have less effect on a river's ability to regenerate itself than the permanent blockage of the river's flow.

Space-station airlock to serve as temporary lab

Article Abstract:

The first experiments aboard the International Space Station will take place in a makeshift laboratory in the connection chamber between service and control modules. Scientists will be able to start research earlier than planned - and before the arrival of the main laboratories - following a deal with the Russian Space Agency.

Manhattan versus Reykjavik

Article Abstract:

The study of genetics is examined with reference to the ideal subjects for such studies. The benefits of studying isolated communities such as Iceland and more mixed cultures such as the United States and the technologies involved are presented.
