Predicting early mortality of newborn guanacos by birth mass and hematological parameters: a provisional model

Article Abstract:

The wild South American camelid, the guanaco, is probably the forebear of domestic llamas, but its population is in long-term decline because of overhunting, competition from livestock and disrupted migratory routes. A new study is designed to assess whether the birth mass and endocrine parameters of newborn guanacos could act as predictors for early mortality. The study of 145 individuals in Chile's Torres del Paine National Park uses a Bayesian model to establish reference values for predicting early mortality. The results show that puma predation is the main cause of mortality.

Effects of agricultural activities and hunting on home ranges of female white-tailed deer

Article Abstract:

White-tailed deer are known to cause crop damage on their home ranges during spring, summer and early fall, but little is known about the effectiveness of hunting to limit damage. A new study determines how hunting activities, corn development and corn harvest affect the home ranges of female deer in the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, NE. The study shows that deer harvesting should take place in early to mid-fall in order to reduce deer densities in large areas of permanent cover.
