Seasonal distribution of African savanna fires

Article Abstract:

The seasonal occurrence of human-caused savanna fires in Africa has been determined in greater detail. These fires are important environmentally because they account for at least 1/3 of worldwide gas emissions from the burning of biomass. Data collected by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Block 5 satellites in 1986 and 1987 show that the yearly occurrence of fires varies according to month and locality. For instance, north of the equator fires happen most often in January. This knowledge may help improve the management and prevention of these fires.

A probable stellar solution to the cosmological lithium discrepancy

Article Abstract:

The spectroscopic observations of stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 that reveal trends of atmospheric abundance with evolutionary stage for various elements are reported. The analysis has concluded that that diffusion is predominantly responsible for the low apparent stellar lithium abundance in the atmospheres of old stars by transporting the lithium deep into the star.

Burning domestic issues

Article Abstract:

Much of the energy for heating, lighting and cooking comes from burning 'biomass', mainly wood in the developing world. A first attempt is made to quantify the resulting emissions to the atmosphere including gases like carbon-dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, sulphur are many more.
