Segmentation of mid-ocean ridges with an axial valley induced by small-scale mantle convection

Article Abstract:

The ridge segments seen in ridges with an axial valley are formed by the convective flow below the ridge which breaks it into segments. In the mid-ocean the convection produces a flow which causes shearing of the plates which are moving apart. This roll produced is however asymmetrical below the ridge and produces an asymmetrical stress which breaks the ridge into pieces. This model for the formation of ridge segments explains the thickness seen in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Mantle convection simulations with rheologies that generate plate-like behaviour

Article Abstract:

Thermally driven convection in a viscous Boussinesq fluid has been considered. The rheology used is related to the Bingham model, stating that a material is rigid until reaching yield stress. The three dimensional convection model induces a stiff layer over a convecting fluid which breaks at sufficiently high stresses. Some non-Earth like features are produced such as episodic sub-duction.

Subtle minds and mid-ocean ridges

Article Abstract:

The basic process by which the Earth's upper mantle builds a new crust is well known but new research has uncovered new subtleties. Some results are emerging from the US RIDGE project's MELT experiment, performed along a mid-ocean ridge system of the East Pacific Rise. The experiment is designed to explore the part played by the deep mantle in the formation of ocean crust.
