Seismic evidence for small-scale dynamics in the lowermost mantle at the root of the Hawaiian hotspot

Article Abstract:

Shear waves traversing the deep mantle southeast of Hawaii from earthquakes in the Tonga-Fiji region, were examined. The reflections were analyzed from the core-mantle boundary (CMB), and signals were selected to minimize uncertainties involved in the measurement of arrival times. The strong lateral gradients in velocity and anisotropic shear wave polarization ae interpreted as representing small-scale dynamical structure within the thermal boundary layer.

Seismic detection of folded, subducted lithosphere at the core-mantle boundary

Article Abstract:

Seismic tomography is used to infer that some descending slabs of oceanic lithosphere plunge deep into the Earth's lower mantle. Images of the D" region beneath the Cocos plate is presented. The localized low velocities at the edge of the slab material, which may result from upwelling caused by the slab laterally displacing a thin hot thermal boundary layer is detected.

The core-mantle boundary layer and deep Earth dynamics

Article Abstract:

Recent seismological discoveries have revealed new and unexpected structures at the Earth's core-mantle boundary layer. Such progress towards an understanding of the processes that shape this layer may unlock a new comprehension of deep Earth dynamics as well as the geological phenomena observed at the Earth's surface.
