Selective amplification by auto- and cross-catalysis in a replicating peptide system

Article Abstract:

Virtually no molecule catalyzes its own formation within living cells, and there is much interest in chemical systems where both auto- and cross-catalysis can occur. A system whereby two self-replicating peptides catalyze the other's production has been reported. A four-component peptide system that can auto- and cross-catalyze is described. The system can selectively amplify one or more molecules when changes in environmental conditions occur.

Evolution of cooperation between individuals

Article Abstract:

Nowak and Sigmund's model of indirect reciprocity was analyzed to test the effect of phenotypic defection. Each individual in their scheme has a genetic strategy (k) and a non-heritable image score (s). The scheme was modified to allow a population of N = 100 individuals to carry D phenotypic defectors, and showed that the qualitative effect of phenotypic defectors depended heavily on the cost of operation c.
