Senator rebuffs academy over Arctic oil

Article Abstract:

A report urging that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge not be opened to oil drilling has been dismissed by Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska (who favors drilling) as just another effort by opponents to block the drilling. The report was produced by a panel chaired by Gordon Orians, emeritus professor of zoology at the University of Washington, who says that any drilling will inevitably have enviornmental effects, many of which are unpredictable due to a lack of data. Destruction of local cultures have also affected indigenous peoples in areas where drilling has taken place in the Arctic, although those people have benefited from some improvement in health care and other services.

US budget yields scant research rises

Article Abstract:

Important US science agencies held on to slim gains in November 2005 as Congress approved 2006's budget. However, they might lose these rises and more in an across-the-board 2006 spending cut to help pay for hurricane relief in the southern US and for the ongoing war in Iraq.
