Setting a bad example on AIDS: South Africa has a unique opportunity to play a key role in creating effective health-care systems in sub-Saharan Africa. It must not squander this opportunity by rejecting the help offered by science

Article Abstract:

AIDS has become one of South Africa's top health priorities, but the government has recently decided not to supply the drug AZT to HIV infected pregnant women, arguing that the money for the drug could be better spent on prevention. Around 1,500 people are infected each day in South Africa and around 16% of pregnant women are HIV positive, thus more children are born with the infection. There are other factors, such as the distrust of certain areas of Western biomedical practice, especially when corporate interests are involved.

AIDS and the private sector

Article Abstract:

The US launch of 'Product Red', a private sector's campaign to fight AIDS is a positive sign that might help other private companies to increase their efforts to take some of the load off governments. The AIDS activists and officials believe that it will take more than just awareness to reduce the HIV pandemic in Africa and the private sector should start planning for the battle as soon as possible.
