Sex in giant squid

Article Abstract:

It is possible that male giant squids use their muscular elongate penis to insert sperm packages under pressure directly into the arms of female giant squids. It seems that female giant squids can store sperm from submature stages, as is seen in other cephalopods. It is not known how females access sperm to fertilize their eggs. The skin may degrade on spawning, thus exposing the embedded sperm stores, or the suckers or beak may be used to peel open the skin covering the spermatophores.

Role of the giant panda's 'pseudo-thumb'

Article Abstract:

The radial sesamoid bone, or pseudo-thumb of the giant panda is reported to act as a manipulator. A panda hand has been analyzed using computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging (MIRI) and associated techniques. The images suggest that the radial sesamoid bone does not move independently of its articulated bones, but acts as a functional unit of manipulation, indicating that it has a more more refined grasping mechanism than had previously been suggested.
