Shaping of diamond films by etching with molten rare-earth metals

Article Abstract:

The high thermal conductivity, optical transparency, hardness, inertness and semiconducting properties of diamond films produced through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has made it the focus of studies by many scientists. Although thinning or polishing of single-crystal diamond and CVD films through high-temperature diffusional reaction with solid transition metals has already been performed before, this required a hydrogen atmosphere which is unacceptable in industrial applications. A new method using molten rare-earth metals is presented.

Oxygen bridges in molten glass

Article Abstract:

The discovery of numerous non-bridging oxygen atoms in molten glass produced from aluminosilicate liquid must be supported by further research using structural models. Atomic transport and viscosity studies are required to ascertain the effects of temperature on silicate structure. The structure of a modified silicate melt is illustrated. Non-bridging oxygen atoms are created when excess modifier cations are present in aluminosilicate solution.

Direct electrochemical reduction of titanium dioxide to titanium in molten calcium chloride

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the direct reduction of titanium dioxide in a solid form through the use of an electrochemical method which results in pure titanium at the cathode and oxygen release at the anode.
