Should courts decide on euthanasia?

Article Abstract:

A British court's response to a request for euthanasia of a severely brain damaged one-year-old may indicate an appropriate direction for an euthanasia policy. The child became a ward of court to relieve the parents and doctors of the burdens and responsibilities while retaining custody of the child who needs permanent treatment at a hospital. The parents' arguments for euthanasia will continue being heard. Though this is not a case of voluntary euthanasia, a similar procedure should be adopted, allowing the courts to establish competency to make the decision while relieving doctors of the burden.

Care in the community

Article Abstract:

The UK Minister of Health has directed British hospitals' trusts to improve the standards of the humane program for transferring chronic psychiatric patients from long-stay hospitals to community care as a reaction to adverse reports by two different groups of inspectors. Local social services departments and health authorities are responsible for providing chronically ill psychiatric patients, such as schizophrenics, with community care in their areas. A lack of trained people for psychiatric care and huge numbers of such patients is a possible cause for the problems with health care.

Research assessment's ups and downs

Article Abstract:

The UK university funding councils' research assessment exercise (RAE) process over all university departments has advantages and drawbacks. It forced universities to increase departmental ratings. However, it strained personnel relations with the hiring and retention of some staff. Research council studentships were also biased towards highly ranked departments. Finally, RAE influences the award of research grants to such departments.
