Singapore plans to double research cash

Article Abstract:

The Singapore government's decision to double National Science and Technology Board's research funds to US$2.9 billion is expected to sustain high growth in both industrial and government research and development. The decision to allocate 30% of the total amount for long-term strategic research will benefit the country's universities. However, manpower for research is a problem for Singapore as most science and engineering graduates opt for more financially beneficial careers with local companies. Plans have been laid to attract local and foreign talent.

Research spending is almost flat for leading Japanese companies

Article Abstract:

The economic recession has led Japan's leading companies to cut down their budgets for research and development. A survey revealed that electronics and automobile manufacturers are now hiring fewer scientists and engineers and are focusing more on product development. Management can now implement projects which were on hold presvious to the recession. This restructuring of research goals and the processes involved in research funding is expected to continue even after 1993.

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the Science and Technology Agency are expected to request several hundred billion yen mostly for the purchase of supercomputers. These requests come in the wake of a political scandal involving top officials of the Liberal Democratic Party who traditionally had important roles in allocating funds out of the supplementary budget.
