Sinking surveillance's flagship

Article Abstract:

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a potentially tumorigenic virus with transforming powers manifested in its ability to alter human B lymphocytes into immunoblasts. EBV hides mainly in the immune system of healthy EBV carriers and equilibrium is maintained by a balance between viral gene expression regulation and the immune system, T cells in particular. Infections can upset the equilibrium. Coffey and colleagues have reported the positional cloning of the X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP) gene, known as SH2DaA, and found that it was mutated in nine out of 16 unrelated XLP patients.

Inhibition of antigen processing by the internal repeat region of the Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen-1

Article Abstract:

The repetitive sequence, Gly-Ala, of the Epstein-Barr virus-encoded nuclear antigen (EBNA1) generates a cis-acting inhibitory signal that disturbs antigen processing and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-restricted presentation. It acts as a mechanism to avoid cytotoxic T lymphocyte recognition without immunosuppression but rather immune evasion, possibly encouraging the long-term survival of virus-infected cells.
