Size and structure of the Chicxulub crater revealed by horizontal gravity gradients and cenotes

Article Abstract:

The horizontal gradient of the Bouguer gravity anomaly over the Chicxulub structure in Yucatan, Mexico, shows the diameter of the crater to be approximately 180 km. The crater is believed to have been formed at the end of the Cretaceous period by a large impact. Karst features, primarily water-filled sinkholes called cenotes, are distributed around the crater such that they support an approximately 180 km size while also suggesting a link between gravity-gradient slump faults near the crater rim and cenote formation.

Appreciate the gravity

Article Abstract:

Germany is cooperating with France and the US for the CHAMP mission, which will involve launching a low-Earth orbiter in 1999. The main aim of the orbiter will be to investigate the Earth's magnetic field, but its three global-positioning-system receivers will measure atmospheric refractivity and produce new information about the large-scale gravity field. NASA is to launch the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment mission in 2001. This will offer an insight into the changes in the Earth's gravity field.

Life without gravity

Article Abstract:

The Center for Advanced Studies in the Space Life Sciences of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration held a workshop on the impact of microgravity on biological systems in September 1999. Subjects discussed at the workshop included insects, mollusks, fish, rats, amphibians, monkeys, wheat and human beings. It was found that interactive space biology has feasible targets and is of high performance.
