Smithsonian heeds physicists' complaints

Article Abstract:

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC will consult the American Chemical Society (ACS), visitors and others interested in carrying out changes to a disputed science exhibition at the National Museum of American History that has came under attack from the American Physical Society (APS). This ACS-sponsored exhibition, Science in American Life, is a portrayal of the dispute between basic research and commercial demands and the views of physicists on the atomic bomb. The APS alleges that the exhibition exaggerates science's setbacks while understating its achievements.

US physicists rally to save standards agency

Article Abstract:

US Nobel Prize for Physics recipients and scientific groups have written to Congressional leaders in Sep 1995 to object to the proposed closing of the Department of Commerce, the parent organization of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). A bill introduced in the Senate proposes transferring the activities of NIST to the Office of Patents, Trademarks and Standards. The budget approved by the Senate for NIST laboratories is less than its 1995 budget.

Physicists rally behind linear-collider plan

Article Abstract:

US high-energy physicists are placing strong emphasis on the development of a large linear collider. Fermilab in Batavia, IL, is increasingly being seen as the best US site for the equipment, although Japan has for some time been working with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center on the basis that the collider may be constructed in Japan or California.
