Song development by grey catbirds

Article Abstract:

A study of young male catbirds has shown that they develop their own, unique songs, and there is little evidence that they share songs or of a geographical variation. Imitation does not appear to play a major role in song development. The birds were separated into groups with some hearing no songs of other catbirds, and others hearing varying lengths of songs. The large repertoires of these birds may be linked to individuality of their songs.

Sedentary life style of Neotropical sedge wrens promotes song imitation

Article Abstract:

There is clear evidence for song imitation in sedentary sedge wren populations in Central and South America. In contrast, North American sedge wrens improvise, rather than imitate. This research has supported the view that repeated dispersal from breeding site to breeding site selects for song improvisation as a song developmental strategy. Song imitation among sedentary populations leads to neighbours having many of the same song types.

Much ado creates flaws

Article Abstract:

The flaws and experimental design on testing the effect of birdsong repertoire size were elaborations of a proposed research design and actually endorse the recommendations for adequate sampling. The suggestions given addressed a different question necessitating a more complex and costly design. Creating experimental repertoires from the actual individual wild male repertoire will avoid artificial selections.
