Southern section ASAS 1992 distinguished service award

Article Abstract:

Dr. Joseph P. Fontenot is a prolific researcher and dedicated teacher. Although he was one of the pioneers in the recycling of animal waste, Fontenot's experiments have also been quite useful in livestock management. These include forage utilization and evalution of feed implants and additives. His career as a teacher started in 1954 and he has trained many distinguished doctorate and masteral students. Fontenot has also led the American Society for Animal Science, served on the editorial board of the Journal of Animal Science and has received numerous recognitions and awards.

Article Abstract:

Dr. David Bucchanan has an undying interest and talent in teaching. He has taught basic and applied animal science courses since he obtained his doctoral degree. He also developed an enlightening course on the impact of society on the livestock industry in order to make graduating students aware of the real world. Bucchanan has received distinguished awards for his teaching efforts and his Young Animal Scientist for education award from the Southern Section American Society of Animal Science adds another feather to his cap.

Article Abstract:

Dr. James L. Sartin is known for his work on animal endocrinology. He initially investigated the effects of glucagon in lactating dairy cows then analyzed the growth hormone in different animals and subsequently worked on the genetics of this hormone. Sartin also founded and is the editor-in-chief of the Domestic Animal Endocrinology, a highly rated veterinary journal. For all his achievements, Sartin was given the 1992 Young Animal Scientist award for research by the Southern Section American Society of Animal Science.
