Tough measures bring a scarred science back to the world stage: ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, east German scientists are putting the pain of reunification behind them

Article Abstract:

A modern research infrastructure has been created in the former East Germany following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. However, this process has brought significant challenges, particularly in the early years, when it was necessary to decide who could remain in research and who had to leave. Many highly qualified people were dismissed from universities, and only one-third of the highest ranking professorships in the former East Germany are now held by east Germans. Within the east German research institutes of the Leibniz Society, three-quarters of institute directors come from west Germany.

Rapid shake-up at Germany health institute

Article Abstract:

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin has been restructured, flattening its hierarchical structure and reducing the number of research departments and groups. The institute belongs to the health ministry and the reforms follow a six months evaluation by the Wissenshaftsrat, the science council. The RKI will have responsibility for collecting, interpreting and disseminating epidemiological data on non-infectious and infectious diseases and will improve the poor quality of epidemiological data in federal Germany.

Revamped Delbruck centre enters new era

Article Abstract:

The Max Delbruck Centre for Molecular Medicine is a research institute located in East Berlin that has survived German reunification and has been restructured. More than half of the 1,600 staff were cut, but many of these were retained on short-term contracts while others were given special government grants. Only the Max Stelbourg institute and two clinics have been redeveloped. The professional staff will have affiliation with either the Humboldt or Free universities.
