NSF gets a pat on the back in report suggesting stronger industrial ties

Article Abstract:

The Commission on the Future of the National Science Foundation (NSF) reported that the NSF's existing program of support for academic research and science education is serving the public interest and should not be fundamentally changed. NSF director Walter Massey appointed the 15-member committee in Aug 1992 after some members of Congress called on the NSF to help the economy by spending more on industrial rather than basic research. However, the commission urged only moderate changes such as better cooperation with industry.

First meeting of commission gives Massey a boost in plotting viable future for NSF

Article Abstract:

National Science Foundation (NSF) director Walter Massey instituted the Commission on the Future of the NSF to obtain advice on how the NSF could use science to improve the economy without diminishing aid to academic research that is the NSF's primary function. The commission must issue a report by Nov 20, 1992 on the NSF's future goals. The discussions at the commission's first meeting in Sep 1992 indicated that the NSF may find the middle ground Massey is looking for.

Massey will leave NSF amid controversy over its future

Article Abstract:

Walter Massey is resigning as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the US, at a time when the mission of the NSF is coming under periodic Congressional scrutiny. The regular five-year reevaluation of NSF goals occurs in 1993, and Congress will consider issues such as whether there is too much research for limited funding, renovation of campus facilities, math and science education, critical technologies and closer ties to industry.
