Sperm storage induces an immunity cost in ants

Article Abstract:

A study shows that sperm storage bears a significant cost of reduced immunity during colony founding in ants. The results indicate that the immunity is lower when sperms are contributed to the storage by more males, revealing that there may be an additional cost of mating or storing genetically different ejaculates.

Nets versus nature

Article Abstract:

An approach to test the evolutionary change in age and growth rates of fished species of pike (Esox lucius) based on unique 50-year time data is reported. The findings suggest that the evolutionary responses to the opposing forces of fishing and natural selection must be accounted for in managing fisheries.

Males from Mars

Article Abstract:

In an ant species, Wasmannia auropunctata, females are produced only by females, and males only by males. It is confirmed that males and females of this species never exchange genes and follow completely different evolutionary branches.
