Stable isotopes provide evidence for poor northern pintail production on the Canadian prairies

Article Abstract:

Hunters in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada use a stable isotope featherprints to determine the geographic origins of northern pintail ducks shot. The results suggested that production of northern pintails on the Canadian Prairies might be significantly lower than predicted by the number of breeding birds and might be related to human-induced reductions in nest success because of agricultural practices.

Relating grouse nest success and corvid density to habitat: A multi-scale approach

Article Abstract:

Predators are the major cause of nest failure for prairie grouse, and corvids are widespread generalist predators that exploit land altered by humans where grouse are found. Predictions reveal that corvid density was higher in landscape with higher proportions of crop and sparse grassland.

Unique island habitats may be threatened by double-crested cormorants

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to quantitatively assess the relationship between the distribution of nesting cormorants and forest health. On East Sister Island, 2 measures of forest cover were obtained using infrared aerial photographs and ground-based measurements of leaf area index.
