Stand by your land: land trust partnerships unite preservation of open lands with that of biologically diverse lands - and take on the sprawl that is eating away at America

Article Abstract:

The use of land trusts to preserve open lands and protect biological diversity is discussed, with a focus on cooperation and partnerships between local land trusts and chapters of the Nature Conservancy. Projects on the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, the Door Peninsula of Wisconsin, and on the Yampa River in Colorado are described.

Cosumnes River, California

Article Abstract:

A levee accident has fostered restoration efforts along California's Cosumnes River near the Sierra Nevada. A grove of trees rising from lands flooded when the levee broke has encouraged conservation scientists to conduct controlled levee breaches to foster restoration efforts, rather than laboriously replanting trees and vegetation by hand.
