Status signalling, motivational condition and dominance: an experimental study in the great tit, Parus major L

Article Abstract:

A study exploring the function and importance of badge size in the great tit in dominance and aggressive behaviors. Results indicate that badge size is an important determinant of domination when there is no prior information on the opponent. When both combatants are familiar, badge does not play a significant role. In fact, highly motivated birds successfully overcame dominant birds.
