Evolution of high mutation rates in experimental populations of E. coli

Article Abstract:

The rate of mutation is generally held at a low level because most mutations are damaging. However, a small percentage of natural bacterial isolates are 'mutator' clones with high rates of mutation. Experimental work with E. coli shows that spontaneously originated mutators arise in populations undergoing long-term habituation to a novel environment.
