Gerald Schatten and Woo Suk Hwang are stem-cell researchers sharing a high-profile collaboration for twenty months until November 2005 when Schatten accused Hwang of irregularities in the donation of eggs used for his research. Schatten cut all ties with Hwang and his team at Seoul National University in South Korea and researchers in the field, many of who were considering collaborating with Hwang, state that their plans are on hold.

Where now for stem-cell cloners?

Article Abstract:

Scientists are surveying the wreckage left by scandal of the stem-cell researcher Woo Suk Hwang after three co-authors on his landmark paper claimed that it could not be trusted. Doubts have been raised about the authenticity of the 2004 paper, but whether it is valid or not, the loss of confidence in the 2005 study leaves scientists with no proof that adult cells can be cloned, let alone to produce stem cells.
