Storage of X-ray photons in a crystal resonator

Article Abstract:

An X-ray resonator made up of a pair of vertical plates cut from a monolithic silicon crystal has been used for the storage of hard X-ray photons. The photons are stored for up to 14 back-and-forth cycles within the resonator. The resonator's storage capacity is determined by the ratio of the crystal thickness to the 'Pendellosung period' of the selected reflection. It is planned to construct a Fabry-Perot-type interferometer with the incoming beam interfering coherently with both crystal slabs.

Making hard light sharper

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to construct a cavity for hard X-rays from two thin plates of crystalline silicon. This was used to trap and control short pulses of X-rays from a synchrotron. This research could lead to the development of very narrow band filters for hard X-rays. It is hoped to use a hard X-ray Fabry-Perot etalon to narrow the X-ray line width produced by a synchrotron by a factor of 10 or more. This would then permit measurements that are determined by the sharpness of this X-ray band.

Equivalence of the sound velocity in water and ice at mesoscopic wavelengths

Article Abstract:

X-ray scattering measurements of sound wave propagation in ice and water indicate that sound waves having wavelength between 0.5-3 nanometer propagate at the same velocity in both media. At low Q-values, longitudinal acoustic phonon modes dominate the spectra of polycrystalline ice, whereas quasielastic central peak dominate the spectra in liquid medium.
