Storing diffraction data

Article Abstract:

The reported inaccuracies in the crystallographic structures of a validation study of the Protein Data Bank (PDB) are related to the use of stereochemical knowledge. This knowledge is limited by the resolution of the diffraction data. Good sterechemistry does not guarantee correct structures, and only the mandatory deposition of diffraction data will put the structures in the correct perspective. The computer programs that exploit stereochemical data have missed out on the remarks contained in the PDB entry. The mandatory deposition of diffraction data will also ensure long-term archiving.

The structure of smart fluids

Article Abstract:

Electro-rheological fluids, flurries of suspended particles with the unusual property of becoming gel-like when subjected to an electric field, consist of columns with a body-centered tetragonal (bct) lattice structure based on energy minimization for a system of induced, interacting dipoles. R. Tao and colleagues devised an innovative laser-diffraction method to prove that the proposed bct structure is correct. Many questions about these intriguing fluids are still unanswered such as the particles' stability despite harsh engineering conditions.

Article Abstract:

The 1997 Nobel prize for physics was awarded to Steven Chu of Stanford University, William Phillips of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Claude Cohen-Tannodji of the College de Fance and Ecole Normale Superieure, for their work establishing methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Laser cooling of atoms involves transfer of momentum from a photon to an atom.
