Strategies for conservation of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker on private lands

Article Abstract:

The Endangered Species Act has been proven effective in protecting endangered species on public lands. However, the same strategy will not prove effective in private lands, especially with red-cockaded woodpeckers (RCW) that need proactive habitat management. Through the Safe Harbor Program offered by habitat conservation planning, private landowners will be inspired into protecting baseline habitat conditions and even improve RCW habitat on their lands since they will be free from further restrictions in case the number of RCW groups in their lands increase.

Peregrine to soar off endangered list

Article Abstract:

There was a significant decline in American peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus anatum) numbers after world war two, when DDT and other organocholorine pesticides began to be widely used. The US Fish and Wildlife Service listed the American peregrine falcon as endangered under the Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1969 in 1970. However, the subsequent banning of DDT led to a recovery in American peregrine falcon numbers. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt has now announced plans to remove this bird from the endangered species list.
