Stronger territorial responses to frequency modulated coos in collared doves

Article Abstract:

Playback experiments were conducted to examine collared doves' territorial responses for frequency modulated coos. Territorial male doves of the Streptopelia decaocto species were found to be more responsive to frequency modulated coos than unmodulated ones. The heightened level of response to modulated coos is attributed to the discrete change in frequency, which is interpreted by receiver doves as perch coos from competitors.

Perceptual salience of acoustic differences between conspecific and allospecific vocalizations in African collared-doves

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted using turtle-doves as a model system, to examine the perceptual salience of acoustic differences in vocalizations of closely related species. The result reveals that the impact of various vocal parameters on signal recognition cannot be deduced directly either from between-signal variation or from psychological experiments concentrating on specific parameters.
