Supernetwork to boost women in science

Article Abstract:

Representatives of women in science groups throughout Europe attended a meeting held under the auspices of the European Commissions's research directorate, DGXII, to discuss common goals and objectives in improving gender balance in scientific decision-making. The commission is committed to increasing women's participation in the union's research programmes, and it is hoped that the meeting will result in an exchange of experience within networks.

Complaints grow over delays in UK animal licence processing

Article Abstract:

The UK Research Defence Society is receiving around 30 complaints a month about delays in allocating licences for experiments using animals. Many scientists feel that the current system for licensing experiments using animals is inadequate.

Drug-resistant HIV shows a worrying increase in the UK

Article Abstract:

Large increases in the resistance of HIV to multidrug treatments has been reported in the United Kingdom between 1995 and 2000. The high-level resistance mutations of the virus are discussed.
