Suppression of ceramide-mediated programmed cell death by sphingosine-1-phosphate

Article Abstract:

Electrophoresis and biological assays of ceramide-mediated apoptosis reveal the resisting influence of sphingosine-1-phosphate (SPP) on intranucleosomal DNA fragmentation and morphological changes. SPP restrains the ceramide-induced activation of stress-activated protein kinase and successfully prevents serum deprivation-induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells. The stimulation of sphingosine kinase activates protein kinase C leading to a rise in intracellular SPP. The survival of the cell hinges on the balance between the intracellular levels of ceramide and SPP.

It's all relative

Article Abstract:

The researchers have detected three big genome duplications in the history of the plant Arabidopsis by constructing evolutionary trees of genes. The effect of genome duplication on the history of individual genes, is discussed.
