Survey flights in honeybees

Article Abstract:

Honeybees may forage as far as 10 km from their hive and they perform orientation flights prior to foraging, that may be aimed at helping them learn landmarks to guide their return to the hive. Capaldi and colleagues have provided examples of a bee's path during the later stages of the flight, using harmonic radar. It was found that the longer the orientation flight, the faster the bee flies.
