Synapses take the rap

Article Abstract:

Rapsyn, a protein closely associated with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, is involved in receptor clustering and molecular specialization on both sides of the synapse. All molecular components, including postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, necessary for synaptic transmission are segregated in the neuromuscular junction. Rapsyn has no homology similar to any known protein despite being characterized by a zinc finger and a leucine zipper.

Presynaptic release probability influences the locus of long-term potentiation

Article Abstract:

Amplitude histograms and other methods of quantal analysis show that the continuation of long-term potentiation in the CA1 part of the hippocampus can be effected by both pre- and postsynaptic fluctuations in chemical transmission. This is in accord with the quantal hypothesis which holds that the release of multimolecular packets of transmitter is required for chemical synaptic transmission.
