Synergistic effects of subsistence hunting and habitat fragmentation on Amazonian forest vertebrates

Article Abstract:

Subsistence game hunting, which has profound negative effects on the species diversity, standing biomass, and size structure of vertebrate assemblages in Amazonian forests, is discussed. The studies show that persistent overhunting drives most midsized to large vertebrate populations to local extinction in fragmented forest landscape and increasingly fragmented Neotropical forest regions cannot retain their full assemblages of avian and mammalian species.

Perils in parks or parks in peril? Reconciling conservation in Amazonian reserves with and without use

Article Abstract:

The debate over human-dominated versus strictly protected areas against pristine, people-free wildlands as the best servants of biodiversity conservation in Amazonian tropical forest are discussed. It was observed that in a heterogeneous region as colossal as Amazonia, sweeping statement prioritizing conservation efforts into indigenous and extractive reserves could do more harm than good to biodiversity conservation.
