Takhtajania perrieri rediscovered

Article Abstract:

Scientists working in northeastern Madagascar have rediscovered Takhtajania perrieri (Capuron) Baranova & J.-F. Leroy, the only extant Africa/Madagascar representative of the family Winteraceae. The new location is 150 km to the east of the original collection made in the early years of the 20th century. The site has a large group of more than 250 adults. Scientists will benefit considerably from being able to undertake new studies of this living fossil. It is hoped to be able to place it in the context of both extinct and other extant primitive angiosperms.

The lizard wizard: Chris Raxworthy hunts for herps in remote Madagascar

Article Abstract:

Chris Raxworthy has spent 12 years identifying unknown reptile and amphibians in remote areas of Madagascar. Development and deforestation threaten the rain forest ecology of Madagascar, where 80% of all plant and animal species are found nowhere else. Many of these endemic species could become extinct before scientists identify them. Raxworthy hopes to compile a list of species that international conservation groups can use in helping the Madagascar government to set conservation goals.

Canned hunts

Article Abstract:

The growing popularity of canned hunts underscores the need for new laws that will outlaw these barbaric hunting practices. It also exposes the tendency of many unskilled hunters to satisfy their egos by using helpless and exotic animals.
