Talks start on policing bio-weapons ban..

Article Abstract:

Talks have opened in Geneva to form the basis of negotiations about a verification regime to the global ban on production, possession and use of biological weapons. This follows a growing awareness of the need to reinforce the 1975 United Nations Biological Weapons Convention. The provisions would include mandatory declaration of all relevant sites and measures to launch investigations of suspected facilities. However, biotechnology and genetic engineering industries fear that compliance will mean extra regulations and the loss of confidential information.

Eugenics row inflames vote on faculty name

Article Abstract:

The council of the University of Claude Bernard in France will vote on the proposal of deleting the name of the Nobel prize winner Alexis Carrel from the faculty of medicine. It is alleged that Carrel was a member of the Parti Populaire Francais and participated in the eugenics movement in the United States. The university commission has collected evidence for Carrel's role as a Nazi collaborator. Opponents of the proposal argue that the man must be judged with respect to the historical perspective of his times.

Politicians support maritime agency plans

Article Abstract:

A proposal from Portugal and France that a European Maritime Agency should be created has gained widespread support from European politicians. However, there is little agreement about what the specific aims of the planned agency should be. There is also widespread concern about the danger of creating unnecessary bureaucracy. There seems to be general agreement that maritime matters are too heterogeneous to be managed by a centralized operational agency.
